The Green Door Alliance (GDA), and the Durham Conservation Association (DCA), have in the past operated as separate organizations but have worked closely together, produced joint newsletters, and have had some common Directors and members.
The two organizations now have common Directors and officers and have joined into one organization under the charter of the Green Door Alliance which is a registered charity. Over the short term a joint name will be used – Green Door Alliance / Durham Conservation, or GDA/DCA - reflecting the contribution of both organizations. In the medium term, a new name will be chosen. GDA/DCA is a member organization of Ontario Nature.
The Green Door Alliance has in the past been more policy and research-focused, and more involved with the Federal and Provincial land holdings and Pickering issues. The Durham Conservation Association has been more active in recent years with other partners including conservation authorities and the twp. of Uxbridge, in private and public land stewardship, land acquisition and trails, and has had a more Uxbridge focus.
While the focus has been somewhat different, both organizations have shared a common interest in promoting ‘Smart Growth’ and in natural area and farmland preservation.
Past news letters and publications found on this website provide details on significant past activities and accomplishments of the two organizations over the past decade.
The GDA/DCA over the next few years will continue to focus on Uxbridge, North Pickering, and adjacent green belt lands, with particular attention to:
- encouraging policies, plans, and actions which enhance public and private land stewardship, including farmland and natural area preservation, building more compact sustainable communities, and limiting urban sprawl
- supporting limited passive recreation opportunities on public lands that are compatible with good environmental stewardship, and supporting efforts to selectively expand these lands, and providing natural heritage/trail corridors linking conservation lands to local communities and to the broader GTA Region
- building a stronger organization and continuing to build relationships with other partners to better accomplish our objectives.
